Magic S. Gil / Magic Sun God Interview | Respect the Artist
This interview was curated by START Shows
Intro
My name is Magic Sean Gil, I’m an American Visionary Artist of Indigenous Chicano, Palestinian and Irish descent. I’m the creator of My own Art style that I call Magicism. Magicism is a blend of inspired elements of Ancestral Art, Esoteric Symbolism, Scenery Art, Abstract Expressionism, Graffiti, Assemblage, Found Art, and 90’s 2D Concept Art.
How did you get your Artist name?
The name Magic was given to me as a kid by my neighbors and it resonated with me. Sun God came later. The Sun is a big influence on my life, in my Art, plus my initials are SG, so people that came to my shows started calling me Magic Sun God.
How did you get into creating?
I started Creating at the age of three. I made my first drawing book at 4 years old. When I was a little guy, Creating was never something I saw as a hobby, past time or study interest. Creating is just something I had to do. It’s part of my core existence to paint, illustrate or draw my visions out on a surface. Like a cosmic scribe, It just lives within til this day.
Where are you from?
San Jose, California located at the bottom end of The San Francisco Bay Area.
How did growing up in your neighborhood/city affect you?
It was a Beautiful struggle that made me who I am today.
What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?
A lifetime of practice, experimentation, trial and error.
What does your current setup look like?
Both my room and living room have been made into creative stations. I have two easels, two creator desks, an office desk, paints and items I use for Art in both spaces. I’m in an Old Victorian house from the late 1800’s outside my window is San Jose State University. My place has an old mysterious and ominous feel to it that fuels my creativity.
Who inspires you?
Artist Alex Grey is an inspiration of mine. He showed me there are deeper purposes for my Art. In one of his paintings, the ghosts of past great artists haunt the minds of current great artists to continue the mission of human mind liberation through the language of Art.
What is your goal when you create?
My goal is to open the mind of the masses to express forms of free thought. I also hope to Live my dreams and paint the world with creations from my mind’s eye.
Why do you create?
It’s just in my nature, something within feels the need to create. Seeing people react to my work is also a reward in itself.
How has choosing your creative path affected your life?
Well, it’s been a double edged sword but it’s also a beautiful struggle and I’m all in. I’ve do m had some great shows and great luck but I’ve also experienced slow months, Artist block and down times. Artists, sometimes we’re starving, sometimes we can snack
Did you have to overcome any obstacles along the way?
My whole life was about over coming obstacles, I came From nothing, it’s a blessing to be where I am now.
What's your go-to song right now and why is it important to you?
So Far Away by Staind. When I heard that song for the first time it was in my teenage years After spine surgery. I layed in the hospital bed for weeks listening to that song hoping for better days. Today when I hear it I smile and shed a tear of joy or two.
What is your dream as an artist and what steps are you taking to reach your dream?
My Dream is to be in the Art history books. That’s been my dream since I was 3 years old, to become one of the All time greats.
What would you tell someone else with a dream?
You have 70 to 100 years on earth as yourself if you’re lucky. You can spend it wishing and thinking about what you could’ve done, or you can Live your truth and be What you came to be, you gotta have guts, will power and the drive to outlast every no and neighsayer. Anyone can dream, but the nonstop pursuit of reaching the destination of your dream, is the ultimate expression of Freedom and Truth. If you are a dreamer CHASE YOUR DREAM AND LIVE YOUR TRUTH!
