D.K. Lyons is a songwriter, producer, performer, and visual artist whose work blends pop rock with cinematic storytelling. Drawing on influences like The 1975, Tom Petty, Third Eye Blind, Prince, Fleetwood Mac, and Jason Isbell, the Massachusetts-born, Manhattan-based artist writes songs rooted in personal experience and detailed, character-driven narratives.

Raised by a close-knit family of women and shaped by the early loss of his father, D.K.'s music often explores themes of love, nostalgia, hope, fear, and human connection. His visual work — album art, videos, and live production — extends the same storytelling approach found in his songwriting, aiming for a consistent world across every format he works in.

How did you get your Artist name?

My actual initials are DK so I've always been known as DK. The Lyons comes from a combination of my mother's love for lions, my first guitar teacher having the last name Lyons, and a photo of my grandmother from the 40s in front of a Lyon sign.

How did you get into creating?

I started writing songs at age 5, beginning with just song titles where I'd sing lyrics while pretending to play guitar with a tennis racket. Ever since then, I've been unable to turn the music off. I've probably written over 1,500 songs to this point, and I joke that I've learned 1,400 ways to write a bad song. Creation is just part of who I am, I'm just drawn to storytelling, rhythm, and emotional catharsis and music is the medium through which I express these things.

Where are you from?

Barnstable MA on Cape Cod

How did growing up in your neighborhood/city affect you?

The Cape has this magical nostalgia to it as its a bit of a timeless summer vacation destination but also has a lot of history dating back to colonial times. So I think I have an inherent deep nostalgic gene inside of me that translates into my music constantly as a result of growing up in nostalgia heaven.

What did you do to advance your skills/knowledge?

I work pretty tirelessly at my craft, spending mornings and evenings around my day job until late hours producing, making content, or writing, and most of my free time on the weekend is also spent on my craft. I didn't grow up naturally talented at anything music related so I feel like I've had to make up for it by working as hard as I can.

What does your current setup look like?

I mainly write, record and mix from home. I have a little corner of my bedroom dedicated to my guitar + vocal recording setup and then honestly spend most of my time mixing and creating on the couch with a mobile desk setup

Who inspires you?

My mom has always been a major source of inspiration for me. After my dad passed away when I was 6, she had to juggle motherhood, multiple jobs, and her own creative ambitions as a writer and always did so with poise and dedication. She's an amazing writer and my love for the English language came directly from her, and she is usually the first person who gets to listen to my new songs.

What is your goal when you create?

My goal is to make something that gets me excited and that makes me want to listen to my own music more than somebody else's. Ultimately creating is my form of expression and asking questions of the universe, so it also has a therapeutic quality for me, and my hope is that others not only enjoy the songs the way I do but also feel seen and learn from the music as well.

Why do you create?

Simply put, I don't have a choice. I would love to spend my evenings and weekends relaxing, binging TV, or doing things for the fun of them, but my brain is always focused on creation and my project backlog is always a mile long. And even if the work is hard and at times, unrewarding, I wouldn't want my life any other way.

How has choosing your creative path affected your life?

Like I mentioned above, choosing a creative path is a tireless journey and involves a lot of sacrifice. I don't have a "normal" life and there's levels of guilt I feel when I choose to do other things when I know I have creative work to do. I think this comes from my unyielding desire to turn my creative work into a sustainable life built off of it, which is obviously such a low percentage success rate. But my work is also so incredibly rewarding and fulfilling, so it's never really a question for me if the risk is worth the reward or not.

Did you have to overcome any obstacles along the way?

The biggest moment that has shaped my life was losing my dad when I was 6. He was not only my hero, but a hero to everyone he came in contact with. He ran a small dirt airport on Cape Cod and created this amazing community around him, and when he died, it sent shockwaves through the community. He was truly larger than life and I've spent my entire life trying to fill both the void he left and his shoes. A lot of my songwriting comes back to him, the loss, and how its impacted not only myself but my mom, my sister, and my other family members. I probably would not have the drive I have had I not gone through this tragedy, and as anyone who has lost a parent at a young age knows, the sadness, confusion, and anger never quite leave you, and I've used these emotions to fuel my music.

What's your go-to song right now and why is it important to you?

My go to song right now is probably Wink Wink off of Charli XCX's new album. I've been a fan of hers since the Crash era and I just love her attitude as an artist's artist who can also connect with the masses. She may not be my favorite artist but she inspires me to show up as exactly who I am every day. We also share the same birthday which is pretty cool.

What is your dream as an artist and what steps are you taking to reach your dream?

Ultimately I just want the freedom to make my art and make a sustainable living from it. Whether it's music, film, or a combination of the two, corporate America is a draining existence and I spend every second I can trying to build a foundation on my own that can support me so that I can leave corporate America behind. It may be a pipe dream, but there's not a day that goes by where I'm not doing something to try and set myself up to reach this dream.

What would you tell someone else with a dream?

Never let anybody convince you that you don't have what it takes. Success and fulfillment come in so many forms, if you feel compelled to chase after a dream, you are the only one who can hit stop. Outside voices are just information, it's up to you what value you place on their words and if you're going to let it influence your actions.

Tell us about your most recent release

I dropped the first single of my new era called "Merry Go Round" in May with the second single titled "Reckless Enchantment" dropping at the end of August. These are part of my new EP, titled Long Overdue May Lillies, which is a companion EP to my project that dropped last year (titled Darling Kiss Louder). While my previous EP questioned true love and its existence in our modern world, this new EP definitively answers that yes, it exists and is worth pursuing. The new single "Reckless Enchantment" is a pop-punk-meets-90s-acoustic-pop-love-anthem, peering into a pivotal moment early in a relationship where connection and lust turns into deep felt intimacy and true love. The song follows a true story explicitly, dating back to summer 2024 and what I believe was date number 5 or 6 with the love of my life. We were out with her friend and her friend’s girlfriend (who happened to by my friend first, both couples met the same night). My girlfriend is an amazing singer and was just owning the stage and we were just flirting and dancing and really becoming something special in between songs. And once while she was up on stage, her friend came up to me and was basically like “She really likes you, you better not hurt her, she's my best friend.” and I blurted out “Oh I think I’m in LOVE with your best friend.” and that just became the starting point for this song. It’s such a warm, uplifting, intimate yet inclusive song that tells a specific story but I think has a universally cathartic feeling about being in love in New York during the summer.
