sketchnate Interview | Respect the Dreamer
Hey, I'm Nate. I don't have wings, so I can't fly. I do, however, draw a bunch of silly characters, and design clothes and games for them to live in.
What inspired you to pursue your dream and how did it all begin?
My dad taught me how to draw people out of overlapping ovals when I was about 2. Something changed in my brain that day, and since then the only thing I truly 100% care about is drawing. The more art I sell, the longer I live, the more art I get to make — and the cycle continues.
Can you share a defining moment in your journey that shaped your perspective and fueled your passion?
This summer I got really into looking at fashion photography on Pinterest, and I realized that if I want to have careers like the artists I look up to, I need to go big like they do. After a week of studying and designing, I presented a new clothing line to my friends and asked them to help me shoot it for promo. Not only were they supportive, they were so in line with the vision it blew me away. I realized I've got everything I need here — and I don't have to hold myself back out of some weird presumption that it's gonna look cringe. We're posing with swords and jumping around, and it looks badass.
How do you handle setbacks and keep pushing forward in the pursuit of your dreams?
I just make more art. Sometimes I'm making something to pivot into a new project, other times I'm just expressing myself to help me through the tough moment, but art is always there for me. I also like to reassess and strengthen my foundation when times are slow — see where I'm getting money, see what's working, what isn't, and figure out where I can pivot if I need to.
Are there specific individuals who have inspired you along the journey?
All of my poopies that support me on Patreon. But specifically, I'm inspired by a bunch of really cool artists – Tyler the Creator, Murikami, Earl Sweatshirt, Mac Miller, and recently the Japanese artist Yamepi. Looking at his Instagram was so eye-opening to me, like he's always up to something and always dresses so cool, I love it. I wanna be just like him.
How do you maintain a balance between pursuing your dreams and handling everyday responsibilities?
Dreams come first, but I find the time to brush my teeth and wash bowls in between drawings.
How do you overcome self-doubt and stay confident in your abilities?
I couldn't stop drawing if I wanted to, but I'm going to therapy now so my drawing hand isn't dragging the rest of me behind it so much anymore.
Can you share a memorable success story or achievement that resulted from your determination?
I developed a trading card game called Freak War over about 9 ½ years. Just last year I decided it was finally time to get it made and put it out into the world. I spent months working on this thing, pulling over 12-hour days sometimes, and burning myself out constantly — but I knew it was worth it. Eventually, I finished all of the artwork, found a publisher, and ran my most successful Kickstarter campaign to date. Now this thing I've been working on for almost ⅓ of my life is in people's hands and they're having a ton of fun playing it. That's my dream come true.
In what ways do you stay motivated during challenging times?
I'm kind of delusional, so I don't need motivation to power through — just water and snacks.
What dream are you living right now?
Freak War is arriving at people's houses right now, and I have a whole summer line on my shop. That's the life, baybeeee. The game will be available online for general purchase in the near future, and you can check out sketchnate.com for links to my shop and all the other stuff I do.
What advice would you give to someone with a dream?
Chase your dream. You're going to die eventually, and if you get there without making a serious attempt at bringing your dream to life, you're an idiot.
