Linda Russo Interview | Respect the Dreamer

This interview was curated by START Shows

What inspired you to pursue your dream, and how did it all begin?

My love of creating inspired me to pursue my dream. I began drawing and painting as a child. When I reached high school, I majored in art. My creative nature also inspired me to write and illustrate books. I didn’t limit myself to just drawing and painting. I learned how to do makeup of all kinds, sculpt figures, and paint murals.

Can you share a defining moment in your journey that shaped your perspective and fueled your passion?

A defining moment for me was when I was a child. I drew pictures of characters that I loved and gave them to my family. I knew then that I had a talent and loved making art for people.

How do you handle setbacks and keep pushing forward in the pursuit of your dreams?
Setbacks can be frustrating, especially when you get rejected after submitting a piece of art or literature. How I push forward is by knowing that I created something I love and am proud of. Although it might not have been the right fit for that particular person or business, it won’t stop me from creating.

Are there specific individuals who have inspired you along the journey?
My art teacher in high school taught me all there was to know about art, as well as putting his own spin on creating. He gave us the potential to become what he intended, which I believe means going beyond any limitation.

How do you maintain a balance between pursuing your dreams and handling everyday responsibilities?
I always have a pen or pencil in hand to create something. So even when I can’t work on a current project, I’m always doing something creative simply because I love it. I multitask during work if we have downtime, and definitely when I’m just sitting watching a show on television and I'm thinking, “Hey! Why aren’t you painting?”

How do you overcome self-doubt and stay confident in your abilities?
I create because I love to. I create what I love. That keeps me happy.

Can you share a memorable success story or achievement that resulted from your determination?
Finishing something I worked on that I envisioned come to fruition is success to me.

In what ways do you stay motivated during challenging times?
I throw on some music, grab a sketchbook, and draw.

What dream are you living right now?
I was recently featured in my first art exhibition at One Art Space in NYC. I made many great artist friends and connected with a lot of great people. I will be participating in another art exhibition at Cannavita Dispensary in Queens, NY this August.

What advice would you give to someone with a dream?
Anyone who tells you that you are wasting your time—don’t listen. Keep doing it because you love it, not just for success. Take a break if you need to and don’t feel guilty—we all need to chill sometimes. When you are in that zone to work on that dream, don’t hesitate.
