Jon Byrd 'Me & Paul' Interview

What inspired the title?

Riffing on the Willie Nelson song, I've been referring my gigs with Paul Niehaus as "Me & Paul."

Where did you record this album?

At Joe V. McMahan's Wow & Flutter Studio, Nashville, TN. Joe Recorded & Engineered the project and
Produced the EP.

What is your favorite track? Why?

Today it's "Why Must You Think of Leaving?" written with Shannon Wright. Most folks imagine the adventures of touring and traveling. But when you happy at home, it's not easy.

What is your favorite line from the album?

Today? "Why must I think of leaving? Then I'm on my way."

Who helped make this album what it is?

The singular artistry of Paul Niehaus. In Nashville we have the motherlode of pedal steel players. From 'country hot licks' Opry & studio players, to more ethereal and "artsy" approaches to the unique and mysterious instrument. Paul has his own voice on his instrument. Of course it can be some combination of these extremes, but Paul Niehaus has the ability to hear what the song calls for. Combined with my finger-picking style on my gut-string, and my own particular singing voice, the music we make is never cliched or predictable. At least to my ears.

If you could remix any song and feature any artist, what song would it be and who would you feature on it?

I'd probably bring in Shannon Wright to sing harmony on the song we wrote.

What's your dream?

To get in front of people and play my music.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream?

Get a straight job. So you can play what you want, when you want.
But a job you can easily let go of so you can crawl in an van an go... for a weekend or a month. Also the kind of job you can easily pick back up when you get back. I've seen so many good musicians get trapped into playing someone else's soul killing mediocrity that pays well, is dependable, and let's you 'see the world' and is... did I mention soul killing?
