Johnson Soldout 'My Bad Y'all' Interview
My Bad Y'all is an ep to hold the fans over until Johnson Soldout releases Versace Vol. 2. These songs were made during the Versace Vol. 1-3 sessions, but did not fit the vibe for any of those projects. So instead of keeping them in the vault, he decided to give them their own project.
Can you tell us about the theme or concept behind this album?
A small promo project to hold the fans over. I kept fake pumping the release date for Versace Vol. 2 and didn't want to leave the fans with nothing. So I took a page from Lil Wayne who dropped a mixtape called Sorry 4 the Wait because the label wouldn't let him drop his actual album when he wanted. So this is my homage to him and get the people excited for the projects coming this spring/summer!
What was your main inspiration for creating this album?
Gotta keep the fans fed! Can't have the music sitting on the harddrive forever either.
What inspired you to create this album?
^^^
How would you describe the sound and style compared to your previous work?
The sounds are still very reminiscent of what I've been putting out over the last two years. The songwriting and song making abilities have definitely approved as well as the sound quality.
Are there any tracks that hold special meaning to you? Why?
All the tracks mean something to me. Recess has some of my favorite verses I've written in recent history. Crimson is the newest track & I'm so glad I got to touch on some of the issues happening today as well as get Joseph Reuben Fuller to tack on an immaculate verse. Why Do I Feel This Way is a super personal track I wrote 3 years ago during the peak of me bouncing back from getting laid off and trying to get the IRS and the bill collectors at bay while maintaining a relationship.
Did you collaborate with any other artists or musicians? How did those collaborations happen?
My mans CEVSER did all the beats and engineered all the songs. And Joseph Reuben Fuller was the only guest artist on it. All three of us are currently working on a project right now that'll release at a future time so be on the look out for that!
Were there any challenges or unexpected moments during production?
Surprisingly no, because the songs were already done and it was just a last minute thing of "What's sitting on the hard drive that needs a home" essentially.
Can you share any interesting stories from the recording studio or tour?
Honestly I don't think anything cool or weird happened. Recess is a solo version and ya'll will hear the posse cut version on Versace Vol. 3. The solo version only exists, because for a while the posse cut version was looking nonexistent since the verses weren't coming in. So I added another verse to the song and was planning to just have that be the song, but luckily a few of the rap homies came through and finally sent verses in. I liked both versions of the song, so I knew at some point both of them would make it out the world.
What message or emotion do you want to convey to your audience?
Recess is the song I want people to listen to while they're going outside driving around doing errands and different chores. Crimson I want folks to be aware about what is happening outside and figure out what part they can play to combat the tyranny. Why Do I Feel This Way is a song to remind folks that you aren't alone and no matter what, you're capable of getting through all the adversities life throws your way.
How does this album reflect your personal growth as an artist?
I'd say it shows my perseverance and my consistency to be able to create even though situations aren't pristine and ideal.
Are there any lyrical themes or narratives throughout the album?
I think the commonality between these three tracks is to just to get through life the best way you can and as authentic as you can.
What are your plans for promoting it? Can fans expect live performances or videos?
I don't have any plans to perform hahah. Stage performance isn't one my favorite things to do I rather create the work not perform it. As far as videos ago unless somebody wants to donate funds, the only video promo is my face popping on your Instagram feed.
If you could remix any song on the album, who would you feature?
Technically there is the posse cut version of Recess that will come out in the future, but aside from that I don't really have any thoughts of doing remixes or alternate versions for the other songs.
What advice would you give someone with a dream?
Do it scared, do it broke, do it even if you feel like no one is paying attention. And when you do do it, give it your all!
