Respect the Shooter Interview with James Adams III @jamesadamsiii

At Stereotype Co we never let distance get in the way of collaborating with people. We recently had the opportunity to work with photographer James Adams III on a photoshoot. James has been on a roll over since getting into photography. His photography caught our eye from the work he did with our mutual friend OddKidOut.  We had a chance to sit down with James for an exclusive photographer in our series 'Respect the Shooter'.

How did you get into photography/videography?

I got into photography/ videography through watching anime and reading comic books. Always was attracted to the unique universe that was built in each story.

What did you first use to take photos?

I used my mom’s iphone 4s at the time because I didn’t have an iphone of my own and I didn’t have any money to buy myself a camera haha.

Where do you go to school?

I go to Temple University in Philadelphia. Pretty dope college.

What is currently your favorite class this semester?

My favorite at the moment is Criminal Justice and along side that is Race Relations. Very important classes with very great professors. Shouts out to them.

Do you have any nicknames?  How did you get that name?

My homies and day ones on Instagram call me the “Senpai” meaning the master in Japenese. Silly but it’s hella badass. I got that name because being heavily influenced in anime, I began to mix it with my style of photography…hence giving way to the nickname.

If you could take photos of any 3 people who would it be?

Most definitely Kendrick Lamar, President Barack Obama, and Cara Delevingne…love her.

If you could take photos of any 3 people that are no longer living who would they be?

Luther Vandross, Ptahhotep (probably don’t know who that is… look him up), and Bruce Lee.

If you could take photos in any 3 cities what would they be?

Tokyo, Dubai, City of Atlantis…you know it’s out there.

What is your goal when you capture photos of someone?

To bring them into my universe and translate that image into their reality. I want them to look at themselves in a different light or from a different perspective.

What music do you listen to when you edit photos?

This can vary a lot…depending on the mood I can listen to hiphop, jazz, rock, video game soundtracks, anime ost’s, movie orchestras’, Majestic Casual, Dubste etc…RIP Nujabes and J Dilla.

What's your favorite app on your phone?

Instagram come on. It’s killing the game right now.

We heard you recently got into videography. When can we expect to see some visuals?

Definitely be on the look out later this month and more in the future. Have some exciting projects coming this year, so be on the lookout my brothas and sistas.

What is your dream as a photographer/videographer?

To be able to showcase my work to a bigger audience. Such as movies, independent films, music videos, sports, and anything in between. As long as I’m able to inspire as many people my art allows be to reach.

What is some advice you would give to someone with a dream to be a photographer/videographer?

Never be afraid to stick to the long route. Chasing your dreams isn’t set out to be a straight line. It has jagged edges, ups and downs, and will break you down until you can’t get back up. However, if you are able to rebuilt yourself and continue striving, you will be stronger than ever.

Where can people find you? (social media, website, etc)

@jamesadamsiii on Instagram. I reply to all my comments and would love to hear everyone’s thoughts and opinions. Peace and love…
